White Elephant Steal Limits & House Rules

Most White Elephant groups freeze a gift after three steals, so its third owner keeps it. Other common house rules are no immediate steal-back, a cap of three steals per turn, and a final swap for player one. Big groups of twenty or more often freeze after two steals, while kids' parties usually allow one steal per gift.

The 4 most common steal rules

  1. Freeze after 3 steals. A gift's 3rd owner keeps it. This is the most popular rule.
  2. No immediate steal-back. You can't take back the gift just stolen from you.
  3. Max steals per turn. After 3 steals in one turn, the next person must open a new gift.
  4. Final swap. Player #1 may swap with any unfrozen gift at the end.
