Classic White Elephant Rules

In classic White Elephant, each player brings one wrapped gift within a price limit and draws a number. Player one opens a gift. Each next player opens a new gift or steals an opened one, with no immediate steal-back. A gift is frozen after its third steal. When all gifts are open, player one may make one final swap.

What you need

How to play

  1. Put all gifts in a pile and draw numbers.
  2. Player #1 picks and opens any gift.
  3. Player #2 either steals #1's gift or opens a new one. If stolen, #1 opens a new gift.
  4. Continue in order. Each turn: open a new gift or steal an opened one.
  5. A player who loses a gift can steal a different gift or open a new one, but can't immediately take back the one just stolen from them.
  6. A gift is "frozen" (safe) after its 3rd steal.
  7. Once every gift is open, player #1 may swap with any unfrozen gift. Game over!

FAQ

Who goes first in White Elephant?

Whoever draws #1. Because they have no choice on turn one, they usually get the final swap.

Can you steal the same gift twice in one turn?

No. Once a gift is stolen from you, you can't take it right back on the same turn.
